Key takeaways
- Missed call text back sends an automatic text to anyone whose call you did not answer, a few seconds after the call ends.
- It turns a missed call into a text conversation the caller can answer when it suits them.
- You can set it up in your business phone app, in a CRM that has the feature, or have it done for you.
- Keep the first text short: who you are, that you missed them, and one question.
- In the US, texting from software on a regular 10-digit number needs A2P 10DLC registration, and every message should honor STOP.
What is missed call text back?
Missed call text back is an automation that sends a text message to a caller you could not answer, usually within a few seconds of the call ending. Instead of hearing voicemail and calling the next business, the caller gets a message from you and can reply right away.
It is one piece of speed to lead: replying to every lead in minutes, whether they filled in a form or picked up the phone.
Why it matters for service businesses
- Callers have options. Someone calling about a leak, an AC repair or a consultation usually has two or three other numbers ready.
- Voicemail is a dead end. Many people hang up instead of leaving a message, so you never learn they called.
- Texts get read. A short text lets the caller answer from wherever they are, without another phone call.
- You keep working. The text goes out while you finish the job, and you call back with context.
How missed call text back works
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Call is missed | The call rings out, is declined or goes to voicemail |
| 2. Text goes out | Within seconds, the caller gets a text from your business number |
| 3. Caller replies | They say what they need, or tap a booking link |
| 4. You are alerted | You get a notification with the caller's reply, so you can call back knowing what they want |
| 5. Follow-up | If they do not reply, one reminder later that day, then stop |
Three ways to set it up
- In your business phone app. Many business phone systems include an automatic reply to missed calls. Look in the call handling or auto-reply settings. This is the fastest start, but the text usually cannot qualify the caller or book them.
- In a CRM that has the feature. CRMs built for agencies and local businesses, such as GoHighLevel, include a missed call text back setting. The reply lands in the CRM with the contact, so you can follow up and track it.
- Done for you. JitterSystem connects missed call text back to an AI appointment setter that keeps the conversation going, asks your qualifying questions and books the caller on your calendar.

US texting rules to follow
- Register business texting. US carriers require A2P 10DLC registration for business texts sent from software on a regular 10-digit number. Your phone or CRM provider handles the forms.
- Say who you are. Name your business in the first message.
- Honor STOP. Anyone who replies STOP should get no more texts.
- Reply, don't market. A text that answers someone's call is different from a promotional text. Get clear consent before sending marketing messages, as the TCPA requires.
- Keep it to one or two messages. One reply and one same-day reminder is enough.
What to measure
- Missed calls per week. Most phone systems show this. Many owners are surprised by the number.
- Reply rate. The share of missed callers who answer the text.
- Booked from texts. How many of those replies turn into a booked visit or call.

Book a callFrequently asked questions
What is missed call text back?
Missed call text back is an automation that sends a text message to anyone whose call you did not answer, usually within a few seconds, so they can reply by text instead of calling the next business.
Is missed call text back legal?
Replying by text to someone who just called you is common, but rules vary. In the US, register your business texting (A2P 10DLC), identify your business, honor STOP, and get consent before sending marketing texts. This is general information, not legal advice.
What should a missed call text say?
Your name and business, that you missed their call, and one question about what they need. Add a booking link if you have one. Keep it under about 300 characters.
How fast should the text go out?
Within seconds of the missed call. The point is to reach the caller before they dial someone else.
Do I need a CRM for missed call text back?
No. Many business phone apps include an automatic reply. A CRM helps when you want the reply saved with the contact, follow-up reminders and reporting.
